Amplitude

Amplitude is the measurement of the negative or positive unit of change that occurs in the atmospheric pressure resulting from a sound wave. A sound with a high amplitude will create larger transformations in the atmospheric pressure than a sound with low amplitude. The unit of force applied over a specific area is how amplitude is measured. Commonly, amplitude is calculated using Newton’s per square meter (N/m2). Amplitude ranges from the “threshold of hearing”, or the smallest sound able to be heard, all the way to the “threshold of pain”. The peak deviation of a wave form has a significant impact on amplitude. The variations of barometric pressure from one peak to the next must be measured in order to properly calculate the waves amplitude.
