Clipping

Clipping is created when an amplifier reaches its maximum ability to amplify a signal that contains more power than the amplifier can handle. The result is a “clipping” of the top and bottom arches of the signal’s waveform. Clipping has the potential to damage both the amplifier and the speaker that it is connected to. The additional power can cause overheating, subsequently damaging the woofer, crossover, or tweeter. Clipping can also cause all notes being played sound the same in volume, instead of in varying volumes.
