Digital Audio Extraction (DAE)

Digital Audio Extraction (DAE) is also known as ‘ripping’. DAE is the technique used to copy content from removable storage devices, such as a CD, to a hard disk drive. Consumers who use the DAE process do so to create a back up of their music on a computer music library. This enables them to store their music in one place and gives the option of burning a new CD for back up purposes.

There are several types of software that are for DAE. One example is Exact Audio Copy. However, it is very common for computer manufacturers to include these capabilities on their desktops and laptops. Microsoft comes equipped with Media Player v. 10 and Macs are set up with the iTunes program that will rip as well as burn media content.
