Double-layer recording

Double-layer recording, also known as dual-layer recording, is an option on recordable DVDs that allows for greater data storage. A single-layer DVD holds up to 4.7 gigabytes of data while the double-layer DVD offers up to 8.5 gigabytes.

A second layer of recordable material is actually laid within the DVD and accessed by the player’s laser beam shining through the first layer.
