Film Theory
Film theory is an scholastic specialty that examines the significance of film in relation to the individual, reality, art and civilization. The earliest foray into film theory took place during the silent movie era of filmmaking. The main argument at this time was whether or not film could be considered an art form and pointed out the differences in film and reality. Film theory became a legitimate academic study in the 1960s and 70s as more students began to seek the impact of film on the social sciences. As the ‘science’ of film theory progressed, a number of categories of study developed, including: feminist film theory, psychoanalytical film theory, and philosophy of film.
