Generation Loss
Generation loss describes the gradual decline in the quality of visual information after multiple copies are made. Generation loss occurs most commonly in the analog format. The culprits that cause generation loss in analog devices are bandwidth and noise, and translating analog formats to digital formats (or vice verse). Digital recording has almost done away with generation loss from copying, but data is still at risk when converting or reversing a file.
