Limiting
Limiting is the method by which an output element is restricted from passing an established mark. Limiting is oftentimes referred to as “clipping” and is characterized in two ways: soft limiting and hard limiting. Soft limiting describes limiting in which a device’s transfer capabilities results from its prompt output level, which will distort a waveform but not completely limit it. Hard limiting is characterized by the minor disparity of an output signal within the allowed dynamic range, or a consistent signal at the highest level allowed for the length of an output period.
