Phantom Power

Phantom power is the method of transmitting both DC and AC currents through one cable in order to power microphones or additional audio equipment. Dating back to the 1960s, phantom power has provided voltage from 12 to 48 Volts by which a single microphone can receive a limitless current. Phantom power was being harnessed as early at 1919 in rotary-dial telephone systems.
