Pre-amp

A preamplifier, also known as a pre-amp, is a type of electronic amplifier that makes ready an electrical signal for continued transformation and amplification. The pre-amp’s primary operation is to boost a signal with a low-level of amplification to a line-level, or standard level of signal strength. Equipment such as a turntable or microphone are examples of weak signal sources that need the assistance of a pre-amp.
