Production designer

A production designer is responsible for evoking feeling and tone through the setting and “look” of each scene in a film. The earliest mention of a production designer in film history is William Cameron Menzies, who worked on Gone with the Wind.

The production designer is responsible for coordinating the tasks of the art department. This department is tasked with building sets, designing costumes, hair and makeup, location selection, and much more. The main goal of the production designer is to ensure unity between all roles within the art department to create a cohesive thematic and aesthetic feel in the picture.
