Slug Line

A slug line is an element of a screenplay that establishes pieces of a scene. This writing technique, also called the “Master Scene Heading”, consists of three parts and shows up at the start of each scene.

Part one of a slug line establishes whether a scene is taking place inside or outside. These locations are noted by INT. and EXT.

Part two of a slug line gives the specific location of the scene. If a scene is taking place in a bedroom, the slug line identifies it in all CAPS (i.e. BEDROOM).

Part three of the slug line notes the time of day the scene is occurring. The notation will read either DAY or NIGHT, or even become more specific using words like DUSK.

A full slug line will look like this: INT. BEDROOM - DAY
