Tapeless Camcorder

A camcorder that does not require the use of videotape, but instead employs media storage devices such as solid-state flash memory, optical discs, and hard disk drives to record video are called tapeless camcorders.

These camcorders are offered in both consumer and professional markets. The amount and type of storage varies depending on the market and the competency of the targeted user. Smaller consumer “pocket cameras” utilize flash memory and are typically more inexpensive. The more costly models are equipped with miniDV or DVD formats. Professional tapeless camcorders make use of flash memory and hard disc drives for the storage of HD content and the speed and ease of transfer.

MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and JPEG are all formats that can be found in tapeless camcordesr. These cameras are packaged with a USB port and cable to enable transfer of videos and images to a personal computer. The digital format allows for the consumer to edit their video and then save the changes. The high-end camcorders provide the additional option of HDMI or SDI ports and cables to assist in fast transfer and increased picture quality for the finishing and editing of videos for professional use.
