WAV

WAV, the filename extension for the Waveform Audio File Format, is an audio bitstream standard for storage in PC computers. This IBM and Microsoft file format stores uncompressed, raw audio.

The WAV format has the ability to store linear pulse code modulation (LPCM)  formats, such as the uncompressed audio from a CD. A WAV file will hold the audio tracks at a higher quality and permits easier editing when used in conjunction with the correct software. The larger file size is a deterrent to file sharing, but has its advantages when archiving files that require maximum quality.
