The big news today seems to be that Spotify has finally gotten the rights to stream Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto. The band’s managers initially withheld the album from streaming services so that it would not compete with download stores, such as iTunes (which heavily promoted the album’s release).

Rumor has it that by tomorrow the album will be streaming on all major radio sites. Mylo Xyloto is only one album, but it shows that more and more artists, especially the big ones, are putting a little more faith in music streaming sites.

If I had an iPad I would totally use this app. I think it’s great how you can jump in at whatever skill level you are. Looks pretty user friendly too.

Murfie: Questionable or Legit?

An new start-up, Murfie, just received $1.4 million in funding to continue their business. Their business consists of buying used CD’s from customers, storing said CD’s, and then ripping them to sell downloads. People are already talking about the copyright violations that may be occurring. A similar site, ReDigi, is being sued by EMI for essentially doing the same thing. The difference is that Murfie takes possession of the CDs, a factor that may keep the lawsuits away for a time. In my opinion, Murfie seems to be profiting from singers and songwriters by piracy. In due time the truth will come out…there is sure to be a lawsuit if the site continues to grow.

Back-pedaling on SOPA

Unfortunately, Google was able to collect 7 million “signatures” to protest SOPA legislation. Citing that the bill would censor the web, a number of major sites protested enough to have 13 of the lawmakers who initially partnered with the legislation to remove their support.

SOPA may not the best way to attack piracy, but it is a start- a much needed start. The bill is scheduled for a procedural vote today.

Continuing the Fight

Last week, a Dutch court ruled that companies who do not block Swedish piracy website, Pirate Bay, will be fined $12, 750 per day. This ruling is just another step in the effort to reduce the number of people who use the immensely popular downloading site.

Globally the fight continues to knock out piracy and get artists the compensation they deserve.
