YouTube and Ad Revenue

Very soon YouTube will be paying a small percentage of ad revenue to all users who post original content, or own the rights to their content. Here is YouTube’s requirements to receive ad revenue:

“For your videos to be eligible for monetization, you must own all the necessary rights to commercially use all visuals and audio, whether they belong to you or a third party. By commercial use rights, we mean the rights to make money from the video.”

This is a great step for many indie musicians who post their original work on YouTube.

Bad Tech Predictions

Here are a few statements that just don’t hold water anymore.

  • “Everything that can be invented, has been invented.” - Charles Duell, Commissioner of the US Patent Office, 1899
  • “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers.” - Thomas Watson, president of IBM, 1943
  • “Television won’t be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.” - Darryl Zanuck, executive at 20th Century Fox, 1946
  • “Nuclear-powered vacuum cleaners will probably be a reality within ten years.” - Alex Lewyt, president of Lewyt vacuum company, 1955
  • “There is no reason anyone would want a computer in their home.” - Ken Olsen, founder of Digital Equipment Corporation, 1977
  • “Almost all of the many predictions now being made about 1996 hinge on the Internet’s continuing exponential growth. But I predict the Internet will soon go spectacularly supernova and in 1996 catastrophically collapse.” - Robert Metcalfe, founder of 3Com, 1995
  • Apple is already dead.” - Nathan Myhrvold, former Microsoft CTO, 1997

Center for Copyright Information

That is the name of the proposed “copyright center” that major companies such as AT&T, Verizon, Comcast, and a number of Hollywood studios will be a part of sometime this summer. CCI will be the hub of the ISP copyright monitoring system that I mentioned a few weeks back. Currently, Jill Lesser, managing director of The Glover Park Group is the front runner for head of CCI. This center will hopefully make a huge impact on the future of anti-piracy in music, television, and film.

Effective Emailing

I found a very informative article over at Music Think Tank that discusses effective emailing techniques. Many bands and artists have switched to strictly using social media for communication with fans or venues, but email should not be left behind according to Rich Gordon. However, to effectively communicate through email, one must recognize that the “quick communication” of Facebook and Twitter have changed the way people read their email…if they read it at all. Check out the article here. I think you will find some useful tips to further market you or your band.

10 Ways to Get Ahead in Music

Robin Davey of GROWVision has a few suggestions for musicians who want to get ahead in the music industry.

1. If you want to earn money during your music career – get a day job.

2. If your songs are not connecting with people – dedicate all your free time to writing new ones.
3. If nobody is coming to your shows – do number 2 then dedicate all your free time to practicing with your band.

4. If nobody is buying your MP3 Downloads – don’t bother giving them away because people still won’t download them, instead concentrate on numbers 2 and 3.

5. If you worry that you look fat and old in your promo photo – lose some weight and invest in photoshop.

6. If you can’t get the sound you want out of the amp you have – practice a ton more until it does sound good – then get a new amp.

7. If still no one is coming to your shows – maybe your drummer isn’t that great.

8. If your band is not the first thing that comes up when you google your band name – change your name.

9. If you already have your dream guitar and amp set up before your first show – sorry Rock and Roll is not for you. If you have to ask why – it’s definitely not for you.

10. If you think that anyone cares what your music means to you, they don’t – they only care what your music means to them.

While some of these tips may sound a bit harsh, or even sarcastic, there is a bit of truth to each one. Sometimes bluntness is what one needs to hear to make changes.
